What is an Emotion?
An emotion is an instinctive and immediate response to an event.
Emotions engage multiple systems in the body and mind, influencing:
- our physiology, by altering breathing patterns or heart rhythm;
- our expressions, through vocal intonation and facial movements;
- our behaviour, by prompting fight-or-flight responses or a search for support;
- our thoughts, by shaping how we interpret a given situation.
In this way, emotions shape how we perceive a situation, how we respond to it, and how we act upon it. They help us adapt to our environment, whether by fleeing from danger, seeking help, or adjusting our behaviour in social interactions.
The Potential of Emotions in Training
When we are faced with a situation that elicits strong emotions–whether it’s the joy of a wedding day, the sadness of a loss, or the fear of a life-threatening event–, our brain assigns greater importance to that moment compared to events that leave us relatively unaffected: most people don’t remember what they had for breakfast three weeks ago, but they do remember what it felt like to hold their newborn for the first time, even decades later. The stronger the emotion we felt, the more the brain tends to prioritise remembering the event and the context in which it occurred.
When we are immersed in an emotionally charged situation, the brain shifts its attention toward the experience. It begins gathering information, assessing the environment, and preparing us to act or respond if needed. This natural mechanism is why emotional engagement plays such a powerful role in learning: it captures our attention in the moment, and enhances long-term retention. Emotions like fear, surprise, anger, or even disgust shape how we focus, make decisions, and adapt our thinking or behaviour.
It is with this understanding in mind that we design our training experiences. By harnessing the power of emotion, we help learners shift perspectives in a way that goes far beyond what a purely theoretical approach can achieve.
The Power of Virtual Reality
Emotional immersion takes awareness training to the next level.
With virtual reality, participants no longer simply hear about a situation, they experience it: they can feel what it’s like to be the target of sexist remarks, to deal with an intrusive colleague, or to face misunderstanding and misplaced judgment while managing an invisible disability. Our solutions allow participants to experience the discomfort, anxiety, or even helplessness that people subjected to these situations go through, all within a safe and controlled environment.
Traditional training methods rarely offer this level of emotional engagement. Yet, experiencing firsthand the emotional impact of a situation makes a significant difference in awareness training. It enables participants to:
- gain a deeper understanding of the human and interpersonal dynamics at play,
- relate more strongly to key prevention messages,
- retain what they’ve learned for longer, and apply it more effectively.
Thinking Through, Framing, and Mastering Emotion
At Reverto, emotions and the power they carry are never used blindly. Our goal is not to shock or guilt-trip the audience, but to foster empathy. We aim to help participants question preconceived ideas, make sense of what they may have struggled to grasp, and gradually shift their perspective.
Each experience is carefully designed to strike the right balance, encouraging learners to challenge their assumptions without overwhelming them. To ensure the most thoughtful and effective use of emotion, every script is developed in close collaboration with experts in psychology, cognitive science, and educational design. This multidisciplinary approach guarantees that our modules are both emotionally impactful and pedagogically sound.
The power of our solutions lies in the precision with which we guide emotional engagement: a well-balanced emotional experience becomes a powerful driver for lasting change, not stopping at informing, but prompting to act.
